I got called a cracker today by a one of our customer’s customers. (For anyone that is keeping track that makes her nothing to us.)
I was a little thrown back, because I was taking over the call from another admin, and I had not been on the call for more then 15 seconds which I think is a new personal record for being insulted in a call.

This blog is progressively turning into my “omg, wtf, did he/she do what I think they just did?” moments. This one was caused by someone that isn’t one of our customers, so I am going to toss their name out for the world to see, and show people that you really do need to watch who you hire to do your computer work.
So, we have a customer who hosts his account with us. Lots of people do, this particular customer, who we will call x.com, also is a customer of rescuecom.com, which is where the shenanigans start.

So I have started using google buzz, the new social service from google, and I have to say, I like it a lot. I first found out about it when google maps updated on my Android OS phone, and mentioned the me “Google Buzz” Feature. So while I was out for sushi last night I posted a comment about how great the sushi is. Now at first I had no clue what was going to happen, but when I woke up this morning I found several messages regarding my post. Now how this is an improvement over twitter is two fold:
First – I can set a comment for a location, it then is visible on google maps, for anyone to see, on google maps via their cell phone, or via google.com/buzz
Second – This is Powered by Google. I highly doubt they are going to have the “fail whale”-itis… and it integrates with all my other google services, awesomeness.
I think I hear the fat lady warming up in the background for twitter…
So what is your take on google buzz? Is it going to be the Twitter Killer? Post Comments below.
I have always been huge on keeping backups (this is why I have most my ripped songs music from Middle School still). In the last couple weeks we have had at least 3 people call in about their servers being down, we found that the hard drive was either :
1) Corrupted beyond repair, due to a Virus
2) Corrupted beyond repair, cause the user had a itchy trigger finger on the reboot button
3) Or the hard drive failed entirely
All three of these cases expected the host to have backups of files for them, and were bitten by the harsh reality when it came to light that they had not paid for that service, and what was worse, their ‘IT’ person didn’t even know what backups were.
Unless you are on some sort of shared plan, don’t expect your host to do your dirty work of backups for you. It takes time, resources and man power to ensure that backups are done, and done correctly. I recommend that you review your backup, and recovery plan in the event something should go down. You should do this even if you are on a shared plan, because hosting providers are not infallible, just ask dreamhost, or rackspace.
